Winston Salem Fitness:How To Deal With Depression

The NZ Herald reported in September that the New Zealand government spends yearly NZ$30 million over a million prescriptions for antidepressants. Concerns are raised about the high prescription rate that includes antidepressants prescribed to adolescents and children as young as one year old and less. This is a shocking number in a country of only 4 million people. The fear was expressed that depression awareness campaigns have boosted pharmaceutical sales rather than providing public education about alternative treatment pathways for depression.
So what are the alternative treatments available? Often people who seek help for depression will be advised to exercise. However, people who are depressed find it often really hard to motivate themselves to exercise. This is really unfortunate, because people are usually depressed because their life is depressing and a pill a day does not change depressing life circumstances. As a result you often hear of patients who have been on antidepressants for many years.
What then are the facts about the effectiveness of exercising? A recent research published in the Psychosomatic Medicine Journal Vol. 69(7), September 2007, pages 587-596, found that exercise is just as effective as antidepressants. Indeed, both treatment options showed significant remission of depressive symptoms and an improvement of daily functioning. Interestingly assessments after 4, 6, and 10 months showed that participants of the exercise group had a significantly lower relapse rate than the participants that were treated with antidepressants, and of course less unpleasant side effects.
The research had a supervised exercise group (gym), a home-based exercise group, a group on antidepressant medication, and a group on a placebo (meaning a pill that looked like the antidepressant but had not active ingredients). After 4 months 41% of participants no longer met the diagnostic criteria for depression. A similar percentage of participants improved in all three groups with placebo ranking the lowest with 31%, of the home exercise group 40% of the participants improved, the gym group scored 45%, and 47% of the participants of the group that received medication improved. Thus no particular treatment was able to demonstrate to be superior to the other options. The sad story is that 59% of the participants did not respond to the treatment offered in any significant way.
Therefore, exercise does not seem to be the magic cure. However, exercise seems to appear equally effective than medication. As a bonus: people might benefit from the side-effects’ of exercising such as improved fitness, weight-loss, and improved self-confidence. Not tested in this research has been psychotherapy as a treatment option for depression. Although, older research has shown that the success of psychotherapy treatment is comparable to the success of drug treatment. See the talkingcure-dot-com website for an overview over a vast amount of studies that compare both approaches.
Are you depressed? See for yourself whether exercise will help. The exercise programme in the research mentioned involved three times per week 45 minutes exercise for 16 weeks. Participants spent 10 minutes of walking for warm-up, 30 minutes walking or jogging at a speed that raised their heartbeat up to 70 to 85 % of their maximum heart rate, and 5 minutes cooling down exercises.
When you are depressed and exercising does not help, you might be in that group of people who respond positively to antidepressants. You should ask your doctor for advice.

Winston Salem Fitness:Life After Gymnastics – Is There One?

Gymnastics Olympics Champions From 1988-2004
Here are the men’s and women’s all-around champions from the last five Olympic Games — these are just brief biographies, but they surely give you an idea of your gymnast’s potential.
2004 Paul Hamm, Carly Patterson
Paul Hamm, the 2004 men’s all-around champion in gymnastics, was born on September 24, 1982, and has a twin brother by the name of Morgan. Paul was the first American man to take the gold for the all-around competition in a fully attended Olympic Game. He is noteworthy for some controversy surrounding his title.
Carly Patterson was born on February the fourth, 1988, in Baton Rouge,Louisiana, to a pair of loving parents – her mother, Natalie, and her father, Ricky. She is the first of a pair of girls (her younger sister is Jordan). In 2004, she became the first all-around Olympic champion for the United States in more than two decades, and was also the first to win for the US in the past two games. The last female all-around gymnastics champion for the United States won in 1984, when the Soviet Union had boycotted the Olympics entirely.
2000 Andreea Raducan, Alexei Nemov
Andreea Madalina Raducan was born on the thirtieth of September, 1983, in Birlad, Romania. She was trained under Octavien Belu and Mariana Bitang of the Cetate Deva Club in Romania and began gymnastics at the age of five. She has several gold and silver medals under her belt from national and international competitions. Though she is listed as the official Olympic all-around female champion, the IOC stripped her of her medal when she tested positive for pseudophedrine (the active ingredient in many decongestants) after having taken a cold pill given to her by the Romanian Olympic Team doctor. Regardless of whether or not she has the medal, she is a champion – and an incredible one at that.
Alexei Nemov is considered to be one of the best male gymnasts in the world, as well as being a pin-up for the girls. He was born on May 28th, 1976, in Barashevo, Russia. His start on gymnastics started early. At the age of five, his mother took him to the local gym, thinking that gymnastics would be an acceptable alternative to a more violent sport. He has had his ups and downs in gymnastics — namely, with many injuries to his arms and shoulders — but left the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics with six medals each. In 2000, he was crowned the men’s all-around gymnastics champion and bore his gold medal proudly.
1996 Li Xiaoshuang, Lilia Podkopayeva
Li Xiaoshuang, men’s all-around gymnastics champion in the 1996 Olympics, was born on November 1, 1973, in Xintao, Hubei Province, China. His career has been marked with many successes. At the age of seven, he took up gymnastics; two years later, he was part of his provincial team, and at twelve years of age, he was part of the Chinese national gymnastics team. He has won many gold medals in his time, including two from separate Olympic games – 1992 and 1996 – and three from the World Gymnastics Championships. In 1995, he was awarded the well-deserved title of International Master of Sports and continues, to this date, to impress.
Lilia Podkopayeva was born on August 15, 1978 in Donestk, Ukraine. Her coach, Galina Lossinskaya, brought her through more than ten competitions all together, in which she fared well. In the 1996 Atlanta Georgia Olympic Games, she placed first in the all-around women’s competition and since then has toured the United States in the John Hancock Tour of World Gymnastics Champions.
1992 Tatiana Gutsu, Vitaly Scherbo
Tatiana Gutsu, women’s all-around champion in the 1992 Olympics, has an excellent record of performance. She was born on the fifty of September, 1976 in the Soviet Union, and was selected at a very young age by her coach and trainer, Victor Dikii. In the 1992 Olympics, her career became tarnished by conspiracy when she took the place of Roza Galieva in the all-around competition, one for which she did not qualify. It later became known that Galieva was not really injured, and though it was apparently not Gutsu’s idea to take over that part of the competition, the two of them split the prize earnings and became bitter acquaintances. Today, Tatiana lives in the United States.
Vitaly Scherbo, men’s all-around champion in 1992, has a very impressive record. He won an unprecedented six individual gold medals at the ‘92 Olympics and, all told, he holds more than fifty medals in total from championships around the world. Coached by two of the best in the world — Leonid Filipenok and Sergei Shinkar, he is truly an impressive gymnast. Now, with his wife and daughter, Irina and Kristina respectively, he runs the Vitaly Scherbo School of Gymnastics in Las Vegas. The website for the school of gymnastics can be found at http://www.vssg.net/.
1988 Elena Shoushounova, Vladimir Artemov
Elena Shushonova, women’s all-around Olympic champion of 1988, was born in May of 1969 in Saint Petersburg, which was, at the time, Leningrad. She trained under Viktor Gavrichenkov at the Central Army Club in the then Soviet Union. With two Olympic gold medals, a bronze medal and a silver medal, and more than twenty other medals from championships around the world, Elena Shushonova has an illustrious history of gymnastic prowess, and in 2004, she was added to the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
Born in the town for which he was named in December of 1964, Vladimir Artemov came away with the all around gold medal in the 1988 Olympics. In fact, he came away a champion several times over, with gold or silver in all of his events, a truly impressive finish. Trained under Viktor Firsov at Burevestnik, at that time a part of the Soviet Union, he also received thirteen other medals in all of his other endeavors. Now, he lives in the United States with his wife and children, and is a part of the National Coaching Staff.

Winston Salem Fitness:What Are the Skills and Experience Required For Becoming a Private Investigator?

So you want to be a private investigator, but you’re not sure if you have the skills and experience required? Don’t worry! In this article I’ll aim to set out the essential requirements for anyone hoping to work in this field.
Ex-police officers are often particularly attracted to working as private investigators. In general they tend to be people who possess an inquiring mind, an interest in legal matters, and a desire to see justice done. And it is certainly true that skills and experience gained in the police service (not to mention the contacts) can come in very handy for a PI.
Having a police background is by no means essential, however. Anyone, potentially, can become a private investigator. You don’t need any special abilities or qualifications (though in some US states and in certain other countries you will have to apply for a licence). A lack of educational qualifications is no barrier to success, and you certainly don’t have to be male. Many private investigators are women, who tend to predominate in the matrimonial and domestic areas of the business.
Certain personal characteristics are desirable, though most will come with time and experience. Assertiveness and persistence are important, along with good eyesight (aided by glasses or contact lenses if necessary) and observation skills. And, if you’re not the kind of person who relishes sitting in a car all night keeping tabs on a ’suspect’, then you are unlikely to make a good investigator.
This is one of very few opportunities where you don’t have to be young to succeed. In fact, older investigators are often hired in preference to younger, inexperienced, less streetwise individuals. Maturity and common sense are crucial.
Skills — physical and acquired — depend on the kind of work you specialize in. Private eye Irwin Blye has more than thirty years’ experience. In his book ‘Secrets of a Private Eye’ he lists the essential personal characteristics for success as diligence, good observation, being prepared, resourcefulness, creativity, inquisitiveness, patience and neutrality. Fellow author and experienced investigator Edward Smith says the most important traits of all are objectivity, thoroughness, self-reliance and accuracy.
Persistence is a very important attribute. You might spend days tailing a subject, just to find the trail suddenly runs cold. Following this you may go to the public records office to look for written evidence, only to spend several days in a musty vault and find nothing! At this stage a professional investigator takes a deep breath (OK, he might just down a glass of Scotch as well), then decides on his next line of attack. An amateur simply gives up.
Curiosity is another essential attribute without which you’ll get nowhere. It’s a good idea to bear in mind the six prompts used by the investigative journalist: what, why, when, where, how, who. Every answer to every problem can eventually be found using those six words.
Academically, it helps to have a reasonable command of English for producing reports and other written communications.
Some personal characteristics are simply not compatible with this business. For example, prudishness is rarely a good trait for the investigator who may have to observe and photograph people in compromising positions in order to establish infidelity. And being squeamish won’t win you any favors from insurance companies needing you to investigate serious industrial injuries, arson attacks, and people disfigured by road accidents.
One thing you must have is the ability to remain detached. You can’t side with one party to a marital disagreement, for example, if you’re working for the other party.
Finally, it is a fallacy to suppose that you have to be superfit. OK, a reasonable general level of fitness is desirable, but you certainly don’t have to pump iron in the gym every day. Much more important is stamina — the ability to keep going over long periods without flagging. On a surveillance, for example, you may have to remain alert long past normal working hours.
If you have a reasonable mix of these skills and aptitudes, then congratulations — you are potentially well suited to working in this fascinating and challenging occupation.

Winston Salem Fitness:Balance Yourself!

You’ve probably noticed this too but I’ve walked into the gym way too many times over the years only to see some of my buddies the “regular gym rats” who perform only a select few exercises and call it a day. They only exercise the “showy” muscles with disregard for the rest of the body. A fine example of this is the “cantaloupe smuggler”. You know those guys, the ones who only work their pecs and biceps and look like they are carrying four large melons at all times. They probably think that they look strong or muscular. But with little else developed muscular-wise they in fact look very silly. If you’d look closer at these guys they probably have spindly under-developed legs and look ludicrous in a shorts or a bathing suit. Another good example are guys who work everything but their abs. They may have a great back, chest, arms, legs etc. but if your stomach is not sporting some semblance of a six-pack you’re not going to look in shape.
The whole idea here is proportion. I’ve been to many bodybuilding contests and the overall winner more often than not is not the biggest, strongest person in the contest with flashing oversized body parts. It’s the guy or gal who is proportionally or evenly developed and has the fewest weaknesses. This type of physique will catch your eye at the pool or beach as being much more impressive than the cantaloupe smuggler type. Remember a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and this especially holds true for the human body.
It may not be fun to blast your legs with squats or do endless calf raises and sit-ups. But if you do work out the entire body in proportion there is no doubt in the end you’ll be more than pleased with the results. You can subscribe to this newsletter at Unique Fitness Concepts

Winston Salem Fitness:To Squat or Not To Squat? ” That is the Question…

Ever since circus strongmen and the early superstar bodybuilders like John Grimek and Steve Reeves were winning the Mr. Universe contest the question to perform barbell squats has been a hotly debated topic. In the 1970’s, top bodybuilders like Ken Waller and Arnold would swear by the squat, while fitness guru’s like Vince Gironda would not even have squat racks in their gym! His argument was that the barbell squat would overdevelop the glutes and would be a detriment to the symmetrical bodybuilder. Others, like Arnold and France Columbu squatted religiously, and they attributed there overall muscular balance and strength to the squat. So which point of view is correct? I don’t want to ride the fence but in my humble opinion both are!
There really isn’t a better exercise you can do for overall body balance, mass and conditioning that the squat. When I perform squats as part of my leg routine I can almost feel my strength and conditioning increase as I am doing them. I also feel that I have endless energy and stamina for the rest of my workouts, and every exercise seems that much easier to do. Barbell squatting is that good for conditioning! However my body type tends to gravitate more towards the ectomorph side (thinner and a hard gainer), so putting on too much mass was never an issue for me.
If your body type is more of an endomorph (larger and heavier) you may not ever need to put on more mass on your body, especially in the glute area. Although lighter weight and high repetition squats would still be of benefit to you for shaping and conditioning, heavy squats probably would not be the first and best choice of leg exercise, unless you’re a powerlifter.
So there you have it, both sides of the squat coin. Take this information along with your goals and decide what is best for you! You can subscribe to this newsletter at Unique Fitness Concepts

Winston Salem Fitness:A Brain Fitness Gym for the Development of a Mightier Mind

The brain fitness gym has been serving the St. Louis area since 2006. Currently, it is the only organization of its kind in the United States, but you can use the gym’s self-coaching techniques anywhere in the world.
As time goes by, we may see more and more similar organizations, simply because of the growing number of seniors. We have the baby boomers to thank for that.
Those of us who have spent time doing marketing or sales have been told for the last 20 years that we needed to make plans for the boomers to turn 60. Now, many of them have, but the boom will continue for almost two more decades.
The brain fitness gym is a great service for seniors. They hold events and offer free evaluations and memory screenings, if you live in the St. Louis area. If not, you can still take advantage of their information and their exercise packages.
The “self-coach” package includes software to help you improve your memory and response time, as well as awareness and eye-hand coordination. A complete manual for self-assessment and daily life applications is also included.
There program is one of the better ones on the market, as it includes many personalized options for a price that is competitive with other software programs, such as Posit Science’s “cognitive behavioral training”.
You see the brain fitness gym designs programs with the assumption that you have already lost some of your cognitive abilities. They assume that you are suffering from memory loss, early Alzheimer’s or another problem that may accompany aging. For those of us that are simply trying to prevent this from occurring, there are other, less expensive options.
Ask yourself these questions. Are you physically active? Do you get enough essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and antioxidants on a daily basis? How’s your diet? Do you eat enough raw fruits and vegetables? The recommended daily number of servings is five.
Do you make an effort to keep in touch with friends and/or family members? Maintaining social contact is important for cognizance, memory and to fight depression.
Are you learning something new? Researchers have shown that people who do not regularly play video games have improved memory and cognitive performance when they learn a new game.
At the brain fitness gym, they include similar activities, since many seniors were not a part of the video game “boom”. But, and this is important, the effects seen in clinical research may simply be due to the “newness” of the activity or the learning that is required.
In other words, if you don’t like video games or if you already play them, the answer may simply be learning something new. Take a class or read a book. Join a discussion group or do some volunteer work.
Practically anything that keeps your mind “active” will improve the function of your “gray matter”. The brain fitness gym is an option that you may want to consider. It’s just that there may be other options. The most important thing is to find something that you can enjoy, for life.

Winston Salem Fitness:Getting Fit by Exercise Bike

Biking is surely one of the best ways to keep your body trim and fit. It is very popular for the young people, as well as for the older ones. Biking can even save you from your cardiovascular concerns and other health problems. As biking being popular all year round especially in Florida, youngsters enjoy the work out with friends around their neighborhood while the retirees do biking as a form of transportation especially in central Florida.
Some people bike for pleasure, just for the sake of going out there and seeing beautiful views around. Others bike for health reasons, to keep their body in good physical shape. And others still enjoy biking as a sport. It is indeed a great sport, another way to meet new people and to be more competitive. Whether it is just for fun or for health reasons, biking is an economical way to enjoy an active life.
But just what if you do not want to go out of your zone and still want to have the pleasure of trimming down your body weight? What if you are too busy to go out the striking trails of Florida and all you have is a few minutes to exercise between hectic schedule at home and at work?
The best solution – Exercise bikes. It is excellent for keeping your body on top form without the fuss. But of course, there are things that you must take into consideration before having that precious exercise bike.
It is good to talk with friends and families who already have exercise bikes. If you know some people who work at your local gym, you might get some helpful ideas from them. Of course, you can always rely on the internet, which will give you a wide variety of information. Another option is to go to bookstores, check out for fitness magazines, and study how the different models are evaluated. It is always a good idea to know as much as you can about the product.
The first thing you need to look for is a comfortable bike. You must decide on which class of exercise bike you need. Do you want a recumbent type, or the Upright bike, or the Dual Action bike? Recumbent bike is the type that has bucket seat or chair-like. It is more comfortable and gives a better back support. It also makes more efficient blood flow throughout your body. An upright bike, on the other hand is similar to the traditional kind that focuses on the lower body part. This is the best choice of you have a limited space at home. While Dual action bikes are the upright bike type that has movable bars on the arm handles. This type focuses on the toning of the upper body.
When you are finished deciding on what kind of bike you want to purchase, the next thing to consider is your budget. You can find different good deals in the market; just take your time before purchasing one. If you think that you will not be able to use your bike frequently, it is better to go for a cheaper one. But if you intend to exercise on your bike in a regular basis, it is the best to invest on it more.

Winston Salem Fitness:The power of choice

The modern transportation has enabled us to travel to places far and beyond. The many modes of transport also give us the power of choice. The choice of travelling at the quickest time; by air, the choice of enjoying and taking in all the scenes that passes by as you travel by rail, being able to explore the city or country you visit freely by car or the choice of a luxury, relaxing journey to various destinations through cruses. Air Travel has grown from tremendously over the years. No longer is the air travel scene dominated by the big commercial airlines, the budget airlines have taken the world by storm. Budget airlines offer no frill travel and are especially useful for short haul travel. However, due to the recent increase in fuel costs, budget airlines are currently facing a crisis of higher operation costs. Air travel has seen some changes in the form of bigger plane like the Airbus 380 which can carry over 800 passengers. Travelling by rail can be a pleasurable experience. Not only will you get to absorb the sights of the passing countryside and villages, travelling by rail are also very environmentally friendly. Travelling by rail also give you the option to hop on and off different destinations enabling you to have a truly adventurous and different kind of holiday. Car Hire is a great way to explore villages, towns and places of interest at your holiday destination. Going around the holiday destination by car allow you to experience the way of life of the local people, finding places that are not a usual tourist hub, trying and tasting the local food in its purest form. Most importantly, time is in your hand, you do not have to rush through sightseeing, waiting around for people as in a coach travel and you can stop at any place you desire. Cruises have become very popular in the recent years. Nowadays, cruises have move away from ‘only for older traveller’ image. Cruise liner is like a huge resort with lots of facilities, events and entertainments. Cruise packages are usually on full board with stopover in various destinations. Cruise liners facilities include swimming pools, choices of restaurants, cinema, casinos, fitness gym, golf and tennis facilities and a jogging track. Entertainment on the cruise liner includes nightly shows, casinos, dance workshop, competition and contest or just sunbathing on the ship deck. There are many types of cruise; you can travel round the world on a cruise liner which usually spans over 100 days. If you like the beach, you can opt for cruises to the Caribbean islands, if you like a bit of history, cruise to the Mediterrean region is a good choice or speciality cruise like cruising on the River Nile. Modern transportation has allowed us to visit every corner of the world and it wouldn’t stop here. You may be one of the first people to travel as a tourist to space soon.
